Anoka Business College was launched about 1883 by C. H. Ives of Anoka. The college occupied a large building on the corner of Main Street and First Avenue. A promotional pamphlet of 1884 emphasized a practical education: Young Men and Women educated to make a living without a long, tedious course in those things which they will never put into practical use. It had several business departments, including a bank. The college claimed that the bank was one of actual discount, circulation and deposit, bearing exactly the same relation to the students as any bank in the city does to its customers. Thus, the issued notes of the Anoka Business College may have had actual worth. The school had 31 students in 1884 and the endorsement of several Anoka business leaders.
