Operated the Hewitt Hotel in Jasper, a 15 bedroom structure on the main street. Their nine children stayed in the lower rooms. O.P. Hewitt, Sr. owned the mortgage on the hotel and eventually foreclosed on it in the 1930's. Sidney and Myra then moved to Jacksonville. It was renamed the Jasper Hotel. Theodore F. HEWITT was born in 1845. He joined the military Enlisted 28 Jan 1862 in Onslow Co., NC.⁽⁹³⁾ Wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on May 3, 1863 and at Payne's Farm, VA on Nov 27, 1863. Captured near Spotsylvania Court House, VA on May 12, 1864 and confined at Point Lookout, MD. Transferred to Elmira, NY on Aug 10, 1864. Paroled at Elmira on Oct 14, 1864, and exchanged on Oct 29, 1864. Reported as absent sick in Onslow Co., NC on Nov-Dec 1864 muster roll. Parents: Abram M. HEWITT and Hepsy.

Theresa HEWITT was born in 1826 in Jones Co., NC. Parents: Rigdon HEWITT and Nancy PITTS.

Thomas HEWITT was mentioned in a deed from Adam Scott to Phelps on 18 Aug 1784 in Onslow Co., NC.⁽⁹⁴⁾ 60 acres which is the homestead where Thomas Hewit lately lived which I purchased of him and is between land of the heirs of William Conoway deceased and land of John Hewit and is on Whiteoak River. Teste: John Hewit. He was a Constable in 1787. He signed as a witness the will of Isaac Gibson on 13 Aug 1789 in Onslow Co., NC. He died before 1790. Parents: John HEWITT and Mary.

He married to Mary NEWBOLD (S?). The records concerning the husband of Mary Newbold are scarce. Thomas is one possiblilty, but their marriage has not been established as fact. He disappears from the records in about 1790, whereas a Mary Hewitt is named as heir of her mother Leah Newbold in 1803. Mary's child Alse was born about 1785. Children were: Sarrah HEWITT (P?), Alcey HEWITT, John HEWITT (P?).

Thomas HEWITT was Mentioned in Court Proceedings on 14 Aug 1752 in Craven Co., NC.⁽⁹⁵⁾ " A Motion of Mr. SNEAD that a Writ of Attachment for Contempt issue against Thomas SIMPSON admr. of all and Singular the Goods and Chattels of Samuel WHITEHURST deceased for not Complying but standing in Contempt of an Order or Decree if this Court thereby refusing to Pay to Thomas HEWETT [HEWITT] who intermarried with Goldsmith WHITEHUURST['s] Daughter of the sd. Sam [but meaning Goldsmith] WHITHURST [sic] his Distributive Part of said Deceaseds Estate. Granted." He was mentioned deed of land sale by Jane Whitehurst Waltom on 27 Dec 1755 in Onslow Co., NC.⁽⁹⁶⁾ William Whitehurst died intestate about 1755. His land in Onslow fell to his two sisters Jane and Elizabeth. James and Jane (Whitehurst) Waltom sold their share of the land on December 27, 1755. The deed sale mentions Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Hewitt. This is probably the time when Thomas and John Hewitt were introduced to the Onslow area. He was found on a tax list in 1771 from Onslow Co., NC. He signed a will on 1 Dec 1776 in Onslow Co., NC.⁽⁹⁷⁾

In the Name of God Amen. I Thos Hewitt of the County of Onslow and Provence of North Carolina, planter, Being Very Sick and Weak in body [but] of Perfect Mind and Memory thanks be to God, and Calling to Mind the immortality of my body and Knowing that it is once [appointed?] for all Men to Die, do Make and ordain this my Last will & Testament in the Maner and form following ---
First of all I humbly commend my Soul to the Mercy of God my creator and my Body to the ground to be Decently buried at the Discression of my Exrs Here after Mentioned and as for Such worldly goods as god Hath Inabled me with I will and Disspose as followith ---

He died in 1777 in Onslow Co., NC. Thomas Hewitt who died by April Court 1777 is not the son of the John Hewitt whose estate was probated in July 1777. A Thomas Hewitt, probably son of John, was granted letters testamentary in July 1777 after this Thomas had died. He was Estate sold in 1780 in Onslow Co., NC. At the request of the widow and legatees a sale was held of the estate of Thomas Hewitt, Dec'd, on February 10 and May 12, 1780. Family members purchasing were Christianna Hewit, Elizabeth Hewit and Judah Hewit. Other purchasers names associated with these families were Reuben Grant, Richard Williamson, Jesse Weeks, Caleb Smith. Parents: HEWITT.

He married to Elizabeth WHITEHURST about 1750 in Onslow Co., NC. Children were: John HEWITT, Christiana HEWITT, Elizabeth HEWITT, Judah HEWITT, Goldsmith Whitehouse HEWITT, Mary HEWITT.

Thomas Daniel HEWITT⁽⁹⁸⁾⁽⁹⁹⁾⁽¹⁰⁰⁾ was born on 22 Dec 1850 in Carteret Co., NC. He died on 16 Jun 1933 in NC. For several years the Hewitt family lived at the Millpond, norheast of Newport, where Thomas D. Hewitt farmed and ran a Hunting Lodge. The Duke family from Durham used the Lodge for their hunting outings in the late 19th century. Hewitt family members still have some mementoes of the Duke family given them by the Dukes during those years. Parents: John Calhoun HEWITT and Sarah Elizabeth WEEKS.

Thomas Lee HEWITT was born on 1 Mar 1925. He died on 26 Mar 1945 in Rhine River, Southern France. He was buried in St Avold France. Parents: John James Jr. HEWITT and Bertie Lee CARLISLE .

Thomas Wesley HEWITT was born on 6 Feb 1898. He died on 26 Apr 1976. Parents: John HEWITT and Mary Jane PARKER.

Whithouse Powell "White" HEWITT was born on 27 Aug 1876 in Gainsville, Hood Co., TX. He died on 26 Oct 1964 in Amarillo, TX. He was buried in Rose Hill Cem Tulia TX. Parents: Benjamin Tarrant HEWITT and Lavenia Victoria COLE.

He married to Henritta Matilda BOWERS on 10 Mar 1897 in Coleman Co., TX. Children were: Girlie HEWITT.

Willett HEWITT (P?) was named as a witness on a deed (Jones to Matticks) on 14 Apr 1794 in Onslow Co., NC.⁽¹⁰¹⁾ He died before Jul 1798. We suspect Willet was John and Mary's son, and would have been named after Mary's maiden name. There was also a Wilet Goffigon (Mary Willett's younger cousin) who lived next to the Hewitt's on Ashe's Creek. Parents: John HEWITT and Mary.

Willett HEWITT was born about 1831 in Jones Co., NC.⁽¹⁰³⁾ He died before 1869.⁽¹⁰⁴⁾ Parents: Rigdon HEWITT and Nancy PITTS.

He married to Mary GORNTO on 26 Jan 1859 in Onslow Co., NC.⁽¹⁰⁵⁾ Abram M. Hewett, bond, Jasper Etheridge, wit. Children were: Joseph R. HEWITT, Nancy HEWITT, Solomon J. HEWITT.

William HEWITT was born about 1800 in Onslow Co., NC. He died before 1842. Parents: Rigdon HEWITT and UNKNOWN .

William HEWITT (P?)⁽¹⁰⁶⁾ emigrated about 1774 from British West Florida. He died in 1794 in New Orleans, LA.⁽¹⁰⁷⁾ Moved to British West Florida about 1774 with Abel Goffigon and Christiana Weeks, and settled in Louisiana near Lake Ponchartrain, just North of New Orleans. It is uncertain if William was a son of John and Mary Hewitt. Parents: John HEWITT and Mary .
