Rigdon
HEWITT was born between 1770 and 1774 in Onslow Co., NC. He was named as
guardian of heirs of Francis Mundine in Nov 1807 in Jones Co., NC.
(88) Replaced Alexander Hicks as guardian of Hardy and Hepsabeth Mundine,
who were children of Francis and Elizabeth (Watson) Mundine. Hicks married the
widow Elizabeth and apparently died before November, 1807. Elizabeth was the
mother of his wife Prudence.. He filed a bond as administrator of the estate
of John Huit, Jr. on 11 Oct 1809 in Onslow Co., NC. Surety was Stephen Grant
and Israel Barber. He appeared on the census in 1810 in Jones Co., NC. The
census records for Rigdon start in 1810 at which time there is a record of four
slaves belonging to him in Onslow County, while his household is listed in Jones
County. At that time he was age 26-45, 1 F 26-45 (Prudence Simmons), 1 M 10-16
(John), 2 M <10 (William and Elijah), no daughters. He filed a bond as administrator
of the estate of John Huit, Jr. on 12 Jan 1813 in Onslow Co., NC. as guardian
to Dempsey Hewitt. Bond of £300 secured by Rigdon Pitts and Isaac Grant.
He was also appointed guardian to his son, John Hewitt. He appeared on the
census in 1820 in Jones Co., NC. In 1820 Rigdon Hewitt is age 45+, 1 M 25-45
(?), 1 M 16-26 (John), 3 M 10-16 (Elijah, William, Dempsey?), and 1 M <10
(Edward, Abram?), no F 45+, 1 F 16-26 (Nancy Pitts), and 1 F 10-16 (should be
<10, Louisa?). (There is an apparent discrepancy in the count of the children.
Check original source material to confirm.) He appeared on the census in 1830
in Jones Co., NC. Census 1830, Jones Co., p. 146: Rigdon Hewitt, age 50-60,
1 M 20-30 (Elijah), 1 M 15-20 (Abram), 1 M 5-10 (Rigdon P.), 1 F 30-40 (Nancy),
1F 10-15 (Louisa), 1 F 5-10 (Emily), 1 F <5 (Theresa). 13 slaves. (Implies
that John and Edward had left by 1830.) He appeared on the census in 1840 in
