bullet Rev. Francis Asbury "Frank" HEWITT was born on 9 Jul 1828 in Elyton, Jefferson Co., AL. He died on 18 Feb 1907. He was a Methodist Minister;farmer. He was Methodist. Barnett Wilson, _The Wilson Hendricks Hallmark Hewitt Families_, says he was named for an early Methodist leader; was a minister in that faith for many years and was recorded as being a fine preacher. "Took part in the funeral of Adam, the slave of Capt. James Tarrant [FAH's grandfather]; Adam was a devout Christian and a true Methodist. He was the one who cut and hauled the logs for Bethlehem Church. "Grandpa Hewitt was of a strong and independent character. He was asked to preach the funeral of a man of whom very little good could be said. Grandpa Hewitt rose to speak. 'I was not well acquainted with the deceased, but I understand he was a good husband and kind father at such times as he was sober.' This being the total sermon. Some did not think too well of his brevity. He said that was about all he could say and stay within the bounds of truth. . . . Another story illustrates his natural tendency to follow the Hewitt family motto: 'Be just. Fear not. After darkness comes light.' It seems that Grandpa Hewitt was a clerk in a hardware store (in Warrior, I think) when a lynch mob formed and was ready to hang a man. They did not have a rope, so they roared into the hardware store to get one. Grandpa Hewitt announced that there were to be no rope sales that day. They said they were going to take the rope anyway. Grandpa Hewitt straddled the rope and with good words and a little help from a sawed off shotgun, discouraged them to the point that they left without the rope and the man was not hanged."

Sketch of Francis Asbury Hewitt...mentions he is great-grandson of Goldsmith Whitehouse Hewitt and wife, Nancy KIRKMAN, the former a Revolutonary Soldier who came from England and landed in Virginia at the age of 16 during the seige of yorktown and was immediately engaged in hauling provisions to Washington's army, who was married after the Revolutionary War, moved from Virginia to North Carolina, then to kentucky, to Tennessee and finally to Alabama in 1819 or 1820, settling in Jones Valley, Jefferson County. After the Revolution he married Nancy Kirkman of Virginia. They moved to North
