HEWITT
(34)
There are numerous records in the chronicles of Onslow Co., NC that make mention
of Thomas Hewitt and separately, John Hewitt. Were they related?
Thomas Hewitt and Elizabeth Whitehurst were married about 1750 in Onslow County.
Elizabeth was born there about 1733 after a group of the Whitehursts had emigrated
from Princess Anne Co., Virginia. Elizabeth's parents were Goldsmith and Anne.
After Goldsmith had died, Anne remarried in 1748 to John Simpson who lived on
the West Bank of the Whiteoak River in Onslow County, very close to where John
Hewitt was known to live by 1762.
Thomas and John most likely arrived together in Onslow County just before 1750
and probably made the West Bank of the Whiteoak River their home, near John Simpson.
Thomas may have never met his father-in-law Goldsmith Whitehurst.
By the late 1750s Thomas and Elizabeth settled on Queens Creek several miles
to the West of her family's Whiteoak estate.
John Simpson died in January, 1761 on his Whiteoak estate. For several of the
years from 1748 until his death he served a constable for the county. Starting
in 1762, John Hewitt served in that capacity. In fact, all county records of
John Hewitt begin in that year. He was awarded several hundred acres of land
on the Whiteoak River through land grants. In 1763, he and Richard Pitts - their
children would eventually marry - posted securities to be guardians for the orphans
Abram and Thomas Simpson, sons of John and Anne Simpson. To date, this is the
most compelling evidence of a relationship between Thomas and John Hewitt. The
Simpson boys would have been half-brothers to Thomas' wife Elizabeth. John Hewitt
would have been related to them by marriage if he was related to Thomas Hewitt.
But this evidence is hardly concrete. Without a doubt, John Hewitt was a friend
and neighbor to John Simpson, and the widow Anne might have sought him out as
a guardian to her children even if there was no kinship.
Furthermore, it is possible that John's wife Mary was somehow related to the
Simpsons or Whitehursts. We don't know her maiden name, but she is likely to
have already been in Onslow by the time John arrived.
Loose recollections of living family members in the 1980s say that "two
brothers arrived from England about 1750." We have found no evidence to
contradict this statement.
Several possibilities from where the Hewitts might have come have been researched.
They are...
1) Stonington, Connecticut Hewitts
A large and established group of Hewitts were in Stonington CT in the early 17th
century. Recently, [name] has published a history of that family. In brief
correspondence with her, she believes that there is no connection between our
families.
2) Cape May, New Jersey Hewitts
About 1755, a group of the descendants of Randall Hewitt left their New Jersey
home and settled in Brunswick Co., NC, on the southeastern corner of the state.
Research of family trees yielded no likely family members named Thomas or John
who moved to Onslow. Further, we know that Thomas was in Onslow by 1752. A
connection seems unlikely.
3) Falmouth, Massachusetts Weeks family
A researcher of the Weeks family suggested that the Hewitt might have come from
Falmouth, Massachusetts with the Weeks family in the 1730s. The Weeks settled
near the mouth of the Whiteoak River and founded the town of Swansboro. John
Hewitt's daughter Sarah married one of these Weeks. A fairly thorough study
of Falmouth records revealed no Hewitts, however.
4) Eastern Shore of Virginia
One of John Hewitts neighbors was Abel Goffigon, who is known to have moved from
the Eastern Shore of Virginia about 1761. The Goffigons were allied with the
Willett family in Virginia. There is likely to be some kind of connection, since
either John Hewitt or his son John names a child Willett. References of Eastern
Shore families do not mention the Hewitts, however.
5) York Co., VA
Records document an extended family of Hewitts in York County in the first half
of the 18th century. Norma Thompkins, in her manuscript "Hewitt - Three
Hundred years from Jamestown to Wyatt Switch," claims that James Hewitt
of York County moved with his children James, William, Charles, Henry, John and
Thomas to western North Carolina in the late 1740s. In conversations with the
author, she said she discarded all the research notes and that all of the documentation
is in the manuscript. The manuscript, however, is severely lacking in supporting
evidence on numerous fronts. Thomas and John Hewitt of Onslow may be from this
family, but certainly much more evidence is needed.
6) England
It is entirely possible that the family recollections are correct and Thomas
and John Hewitt were brothers and that emigrated from England about 1750. This
needs to be better researched.
Children were: Thomas HEWITT,
John HEWITT.
Abram
M. HEWITT(35) was born in 1812 in
Jones Co., NC. Military Service records indicates birth year as 1819. He appeared

Hewitt" as 1812. He died on 9 Jan 1862 in Camp Howe, VA. Cause of death
