Married by Rev. Rufus Coons 10 Jan 1872 to Martha Ellen Hewitt,
according to his handwritten "Family Reckord" in possession of
Kathleen Much. Grandson Joseph C. Much says he died in the
Confederate Home in Austin in 1926 or 1927. Grandson Fred Much
remembered him as

an old man with a long white beard who told his grandsons that
he "ate rats at the siege of Vicksburg." [His pension record
indicates that he was not in service until after Vicksburg fell
4 July 1863.] Daughter Dora Much thought he might have served in
Hood's Brigade from Texas, but no evidence places him in TX
before the Civil War. [His affidavit says he came to TX 1876 or
1877.]

TX Confederate Home records (abstract received by KM 7-12-93)
state that his occupation was "farmer"; he was born in Alabama;
his marital status was widower; he came to TX in 1876; his
residence was Alvin, TX; he was admitted to the home 26 April
1928, disability "old age";

he served in Co. K, 30th Alabama Regiment, Pettis Brigade, Army
of Tennessee; religious persuasion Presbyterian; he died 31
August 1928 and his body was shipped to Alvin; next of kin was
Mrs. Fred Much (daughter), Alvin.

Soldier's Application for Pension #22335, Book 3, Brazoria Co.,
TX, in the TX State Archives (copy received by KM 7-12-93),
filed 30 July 1913, approved 1 Sept. 1913, "for use of soldiers,
who are in indigent circumstances", contains an affidavit by
F.E. Acton and corroborating

affidavits from witnesses. F.E. Acton swore that "I enlisted
and served in the military service of the Confederate States . .
. and that I did not desert the Confederate service . . . ; that
I was

honorably discharged or surrendered at Charlott [sic] N.C. at
end of the war in 1865. . . . that I have been a bona fide
citizen of this State since prior to January 1, A.D. 1880, and
have been continuously since a citizen of the State of Texas. .
. . My age is 67 years on the 16th, Sept, 1912. [I was born] in
Shelby County Ala. [I have resided in TX] since 1877. [I reside]
in Brazoria County . . . since 1896, my Post Office Address is
Alvin, Texas. . . . Have never applied [for a

Confederate pension] before this application. [occupation:] Have
been a farmer, but am not now in any business. [command in which
I served was organized] in Snehby [sic--typo for Shelby] County
Alabama. I enlisted in 1863, Co. K, of the 30th, Ala. Reg. I
served under Bragg, Jos. E. Johnston, & Hood. Never
transferred. Infantry. Never commissioned. Was never detailed
for special service." Signed F.E. Acton, 28 January 1913,
Brazoria County, TX. A.E. Acton affidavit: "I am applicants
brother and was at home when he enlisted in the Confederate
service. I was about 16 years old at the time he joined the
army. He enlisted in Shelby County Alabama. My recollection is
that he enlisted in Company K, 30th Ala. Infantry. He served
about three years. He came home after the surrender in the
spring of 1865." Signed 13 February 1913, Comanche County, TX.


S.N. Acton affidavit: "S.N. Acton who is personally known to me
to be a credible citizen, who being by me duly sworn states that
he is personally acquainted with the foregoing applicant F.E.
Acton, that the facts set forth and statements made in his
application are correct and true; that affiant has no interest
in this claim; that applicant's habits are good and free from
dishonor [and] . . . makes oath to the following facts . . . 'As
best I recall, F.E. Acton joined Company K, 30th Alabama
Regiment of Infantry in the late summer or fall of 1863. I am
positive of his joining said company and regiment in the year
1863, but I am not positive as to the month. He served
continuously in said co. and reg. until the surrender of Joseph
E. Johnson [sic] in North Carolina in 1865. I know positively
of his said service because I belonged to his same co. and reg.
and served with him. I

furthermore know that said F.E. Acton has been a resident
citizen of the State of Texas continuously since prior to Jan.
1st A.D. 1880.'" Signed 24 Feb. 1913 by S.N. Acton and C.R.
Buchanan, County Judge of Scurry County, TX. Application for
Mortuary Warrant (copy received from TX State Archives 7-12-93
by KM), states that F.E. Acton, file number 22335, "whose
original county was Brazoria", died 31 August 1928 in Austin,
Travis Co., TX, in the Texas Confederate Home, sworn

by A.W. Taber for Mrs. Fred Much, daughter, of Alvin, TX.
Certificate of undertaker H.J. Brown gives death date 1 Sept.
1928. T.C. Hairston, M.D., stated that the cause of death was
"exhaustion".
